Schools Need Improvement

Schools are in need of some sort of reform. The system we have today is broken and makes it to where kids who do not deserve to graduate get a diploma anyway. I say they do not deserve to get a diploma for many reasons and some of those reasons are not even the students fault but the teachers fault. Here are some stories about when I was in high school.

I say school needs improvement for several reasons and one of those reasons is because when I was in school there was a student who skipped school for most of the year, but still passed on to the next grade. The student did this by taking an online class that my school offered and if completed you could get credit for the class you took. The class was only for the people who missed a lot or had really bad grades. The funny thing about the online class is that I heard all of the people who were taking it say that it was much easier then the classes you took with a teacher and that it was much easier to cheat on tests since you could google the answer right at the computer with no one knowing or even having all the notes that were online pulled up while you took the test or quiz. So as you could imagine the people who took this online make up class got an easy ride to a diploma.

Although they were not the only people, the second reason I say the school system is broken is because in some classes the people who did not really care about school got stuck some random class and the teachers basically did not care what they did. I know this because I had to take a class that had those people in it. In the class we would usually have a little had out that we had to fill in about the section of the chapter that we were in and it should have only take ten minutes to thirty minutes to complete. Although, the students that were in the class took three days to complete the hand out and some of them still did not even finish the hand out then. This was for each section in a chapter, so instead of completing a chapter in one to two weeks it took nearly four weeks to finish a chapter. There was another time in the class that we had to make an online presentation that only required ten definitions and a picture to go along with each definition. This project only took me a class period to complete and it took the rest of the class two weeks. At the end of the two weeks the only reason the project ended was because the teacher was frustrated with the students taking so long on it and we did not even get to see any of the presentations, even though most people still were not done with it. The funny thing was that even though no one finished any work in the class they still all passed. Now do not take this as the teacher of this class was a bad teacher because I was in other classes that that teacher taught and they were great. The students of that class were just not motivated to learn and the teacher could not force them to learn, which made the teacher unmotivated in the class.

I even heard from my friend that in one of the classes he took that year the teacher never assigned any work. They only did about two too three things in the class the whole year. The kids in the class were not complaining and they got a free credit towards graduating out of the deal, but that is all they got. They learned absolutely nothing from that class since all they did was sit around, talk, play on there phones, and play on computers the whole time they were in class.

I think one of the biggest first steps to getting schools back on track is to get the teachers motivated to teach and then the biggest step after that is to get the students motivated to learn. I do not know the best way to do that but if those two things are not taken care of then any reform you do to the school system will not work or at least will still be majorly flawed. These are some of the reasons that I have seen first hand that makes me think that schools need improvement.
